20 things you didn't know about Windows XP

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type 'gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going towww.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

The Main Problem : The problem is that whosoever has had the chance of being in power and authority in any form has only acted to fulfill his personal desires, greed for money, fill his own pockets and lust for power. No one has ever thought of Pakistan or the ordinary people, or to improve their living and their miserable plight.

Pakistani Society: There are still few people left whom we can call true Muslims or good humans, but in general the majority is corrupt in one way or the other; that’s why we have such rulers and that’s why we are in such a miserable plight. No rule of law: In

Pakistan

, there is no rule of law. The only rule that is prevalent is “Might is Right”. Anyone who is in power or authority would oppress the ones weaker than him in one form or the other. This is the same reason why Army takes on power every few years, since Army is the most powerful institution in the country, so presumably it doesn’t have to follow the law of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Institutions & Individuals not performing their duties: The institutions (e.g., Army, Law enforcement agencies, Judiciary, Parliament, National & Provincial Assemblies, Bureaucracy and other Governing bodies) and the people at various positions are not performing their duties with dedication and sincerity. Since the national institutions are the structure on which the political, social and economic system of the country lays and the moral values of the society are directly related to the system of the country. At times people are more afraid of the law enforcement agencies than they are from robbers or thieves. Corruption, Greed for wealth and Mismanagement: The funds allocated for development in almost all the sectors (health, education, transportation, infrastructure etc) are looted by government officials, politicians and members of other government bodies.

Illiteracy, Ignorance and the Education System: With a literacy rate around 40%; in a world where the driving force for almost everything (from day-to-day living to wars) is research and technology, we are definitely in a very bad position. No respect to teaching profession and teachers. We spend around 2% of our total budget on education, while in some countries (e.g., Japan etc) it was around 30-40% when they were really putting focus on education. There is no research culture. There are government schools, there are private schools (which has become a big business providing low quality education), then there are madrassas; each one of these branding a different system and producing a different class of people, the first system produces rulers and bureaucrats, the second system produces workers and the last one produces mullahs and so-called terrorists.

Lawlessness, Poor law & order situation: Most of the times the law enforcement agencies are busy in fulfilling government orders of arresting people from opposition or for giving protocol duties and providing security to the VIPs and VVIPs, or may even be busy in theft and robbing themselves. Crimes like theft, robbery, rape, murder, kidnapping, fraud, car lifting, smuggling etc are common. The reasons of corruption and miserable performance of law enforcement agencies include very low pays for them, illiteracy, improper training, the social structure and values and the plight of the society in general. Inequality, Difference of classes and Poverty: There is Elite class, Middle class (upper and lower), Poor class, then there are people who are living below the poverty line (around 33% of the total population) and can hardly afford meal two times a day. The gap between the ultra-rich elite class (which make app. 2% of the whole population) and the poor class is very large. Poor Economy & Unemployment: There is no security in the country hence no industry and no foreign investment. The driving force for today’s worldwide economy is technology but we lag far behind. In 2006, we have foreign debts estimated at $40 Billion. When and who is going to pay these debts and the yearly interest on these which keeps on increasing every year And when you realize that most of these debts were never spent on Pakistan or its people.

In 2007 the inflation rate was 11%, as a result of which the poor suffer badly. Petrol prices are increased every few weeks by giving a lame excuse that it is linked with the international market. In the past few years, prices of almost all the things have increased 3-4 times, while in comparison the incomes of the majority of the people have increased only slightly, resulting into very difficult circumstances for the majority of the people. The plight of our economy is such that we have to import most of the things from abroad, from technical equipments for day-to-day life to machinery to other commodities and even edibles like wheat and vegetables. In the past few years, the areas of major financial activities have been investment in real estate and loans by banks to end consumers for car financing and other commodities or luxuries; this clearly depicts a stagnant economy having no industry and no opportunities for employment.

Because of poor economy, unemployment is very high (around 8% in 2006); hence youth and other people who have degrees, but don’t get any jobs because of poor economy or because of no rule of merit, ultimately get frustrated and tend to indulge in crimes. Moreover many people (uneducated and highly educated alike) leave for other countries.

Lust for power: Power comes with responsibilities, but not in Pakistan where power comes with unlimited opportunities to do whatever you want, without any check.

Differences between ethnicities, sects and provinces and the Religious extremism: Pakistan is a multi-ethnic country with many ethnicities; larger ones being Punjabis, Sindhis, Pathans, Balochs etc. Then there are Islamic religious sects; Sunnis and Shias being the largest two; then there are sects within sects. General Behaviour and Attitude: The general behaviour is of selfishness, deception, lying, hypocrisy, leg-pulling, looting, grabbing with very exceptions of decent and posotice peopke. Outdated and ill Norms: Who’ll justify these honour killings, and customs like “Karokaari”, “Wanni” and “Satti” as part of Islam?

We have also developed a materialism and show-off culture, in which everyone is running after wealth and materialism and has to show off the amount of wealth he has no matter from which sources has this wealth been accumulated. Far behind other nations: What is our share as a country or as a nation in world’s progress and the technical advancements that have been made? As a result, we are treated like a third world country and so are our people. Relationship with other countries and nations: For any country, this is the basic rule that relationships with other countries should be based on national interest and not on personal interests and wills.Fighting a war for America and killing own people, probably not much different from previous rulers, who would do anything just to prolong their rule, even if they have to serve other countries’ interests (in most instances USA’s) instead of Pakistan. Foreign policy and politics is a very complex affair, and requires a lot of professionalism, training and experience.

ENTITIES RESPONSIBLE:

Politicians and Rulers. Army & the Armed Forces: Moreover nearly 30-40% of the budget or 5% of GDP is spent on defence. Bureaucracy: They are trained in a similar way as they were used to be in British times, just to rule the people and act as if they are not part of them but above them. Feudalism, Landlords, Jageer-Daars & Nawaabs: Jandlords, jageer-daars, wadairaas, Chaudaries and Nawaabs; which keep them ignorant, illiterate and poor.Illiterate Mullahs & Hard-line Extremists: The Ordinary People:The ordinary people have been either too ignorant or too powerless to do anything against all this. It’s not possible for the common man to take part in politics, since a profitable business like Pakistani politics require huge investments.

SOLUTIONS and STEPS that must be taken:

So in case a revolution is not possible, then swift gradual change should be brought in all the departments. Change of Attitude & Change of System

· Follow the moral and ethical codes and be more responsible. We need a lot of hard work, devotion, punctuality and sincerity on part of all the people. Awareness has to be brought in the people about their rights and duties. We need to have a vision and long term planning. National pride and dignity has to be established.

· We have to develop political, social, religious and cultural tolerance. Rule of Law & Constitution

· Law has to be superior to power and wealth, everybody has to follow it. They should be provided with total social security and pays and other allowances of judges. The law enforcement agencies should be equipped with modern infrastructure.

· Reforms for every institution, Proper Planning & Restructuring

· Only very honest and capable people are to be appointed at all posts and especially posts which involve any kind of public dealing. The defence budget should be under strict scrutiny and should be reduced.

· The population has to be planned and controlled. New dams and other sources of energy (e.g., thermal, nuclear etc) have to be developed. Sovereignty of the State: Political solutions (neither military nor by force) should be sought as first priority for all the problems (we still remember the effects of use of force in 1971). However the writ of the state has to be maintained in all cases and if unavoidable, sensible use of force is permissible.

No Military Rule or involvement in politics ever again

· Reforms and restructuring have to be carried out in the Army itself and their mentality and attitude have to be changed. Corrupt people, looters and criminals shouldn’t be allowed to contest for any kind of government posts or act as politicians.A leadership grooming system should be developed (e.g., as implemented in China), which should start at school level and produces perfect professionals and good human beings in every field of life.

Corrupts, criminals to get their due punishments: There should be proper accountability, not misused for political purposes, and everyone has to be accountable. Changing & restructuring the Education System

Focus on Economy, Technology, Employment:Prosperity can only stem from economic development and growth, zero corruption and rule of law. To improve economy, we have to attract foreign investments like those done in China, Malaysia, India etc since currently the technically advanced countries are US, Japan and European countries. We should attract investors from these countries or Arab states (which have lots of wealth) and start industrialization in Pakistan; this will also help solve the problem of unemployment and ultimately eliminate poverty. Economic development requires political stability and long term economic policies, which should be implemented with a vision of next 15-20 years. Government’s main source of revenue shouldn’t be sales taxes and duties on petrol (which currently makes app. half the price per liter), since it directly affects the end consumer.

· The taxation system has to be improved, tax collection should be fair; everyone should pay tax proportionate to his income and/or to the amount of wealth he has. There should be justified use of tax money by the government.

· The effects of any economical progress should reach everybody and should not remain confined to a select few who are already well-off. Largest exporters in the world (US 15.7%, Germany 7.7%, China 5.4%, France 5.1%, UK 5.1%, Japan 4.5%) are the most developed and prosperous countries. In 2005, Pakistan’s exports stood around $14 Billion and the imports at $21 Billion. To have a prosperous economy, exports should exceed imports by a vast margin, so that there is flow of wealth from outside to inside the country and not the other way round. God has gifted Pakistan

with a vast and diverse land, natural resources and diverse climate; all of these should be used in a proper way with proper planning.

Land Reforms, No feudalism:Land reforms are inevitable; India did it around 1950, how about us? The feudal system has to be eliminated. The state should confiscate lands from landlords, jageer-daars and wadairaas and distribute it equally among the poor people who actually work and cultivate on these lands and do all the hard work. Agriculture, farming and dairy should be developed and should be made a full fledge industry; on one hand this would improve economy, create employment and thus reduce the influx of population from rural to urban areas. Geographical Restructuring & No more ethnic, province and sect based politics: No more Muhajir, Balochi, Punjabi, Pathan, Sindhi labels and race or ethnicity based nationalism. The provincial division of Pakistan has to be restructured, preferably into more administrative divisions. Instead of four provinces as now, we should have more states maybe around 15-20, with homogeneously divided population and land, and given more functional autonomy and self dependency.

· The tribal areas (including FATA) have to be brought under government control and much should be done for the progress and development of these and other undeveloped and backward areas.

· All the sectarian and race based organizations and parties have to be banned and dissolved.

· All the mosques, madrassas, related institutions and organizations (jamaats, lashkars etc) should be under government control, the syllabus and courses of madrassas should be revised.

Equality and justice for all, Rule of Merit: There should be no class-difference; all the people should be equal. There should be equal opportunities for all regardless of the ethnic or religious ties or the amount of wealth or power they or their forefathers have. Welfare State and Wealth is no longer a status symbol: It should be the responsibility of the state to provide the basic necessities of life including food, education, housing, justice, law and order, health facilities and employment to all the people. Relationships with other countries & the Foreign Policy:The foreign policy should be long-term, based on national interests and equality and shouldn’t have U-turns just because the government has changed or the current ruler has personal interests. We are not terrorists nor we support terrorism in any form; however issues like Kashmir, Palestine, Chechnya etc have to be solved according to the will of the people living in these areas and according to the UN resolutions.

· We’ve to realize that this so called “War on Terrorism” is just a baseless crusade against Muslims, so we shouldn’t become a part or support the oppressors and colonists like US and UK, we shouldn’t kill our own people and our Muslim brothers.

Role & Responsibilities of Media: In this “rapidly turning into global-village” world, the media is of utmost importance, it is an indispensable tool for information, education and propaganda. The media (including newspapers, TV stations, radio, internet related media etc) should be independent, critical and honest. They should be responsible and never act against national interest or Islamic limits. No one is exempt from criticism be it Army, Judiciary, Politicians, Bureaucracy, Law enforcement agencies or government officials and no institution is sacred. Media has to find out faults, discrepancies, corruption and injustice in the system, government actions, institutions and society and highlight them so that things can be improved. The media should also act wisely against foreign propaganda and influx of foreign culture which is adversely affecting our norms and youth.

Role of Women: Women are integral part of the society and with being around 50% of the population, they can play a very important part in building the society and in country’s development.The women should not be deprived of education, jobs and other rights. They should play equal part in everything remaining within the limits defined by Islam. They should be free, should be respected, should have the right to do what they want and should not be exploited or killed in the name of ill-norms. Minorities’ Role and Rights: The minorities should be safe and should be a part of the society as all other people. They shouldn’t be left out or treated discriminately based on their religion. Everyone living in Pakistan is a Pakistani and has the same right to everything as all the other people. Role & Duties of NGOs: The NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) get lots of funds from abroad and various other sources but unfortunately some of them work against national interests by advancing foreign agenda by exploiting few unfortunate incidents. The NGOs should work in collaboration with the government for the betterment of the common man and the society by addressing and solving the real issues e.g. poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, injustice etc rather than arranging marathons or fashion shows which have no benefit for the common man or the society. Follow Islamic Teachings: The Islam that we practice now is confined to prayers (in most case only Friday [Jumma] prayers), Fasting (Roza) and celebrating Eids. This is not what Islam is meant for; Islam is a complete code of life with orders and teachings for every walk of life, which have to be followed to be successful in this world and the life after death. One important thing to be remembered is not to impose Islam; it has to be developed from within. It is everyone’s own duty to follow the teachings of Islam and if someone does not, he is answerable to Allah; there should not be any more declarations (fatwaas) of kufar (infidelity) or Islam. The Islamic system that should be implemented has to be of the kind of Hazrat Umar Farooq (r.a.)’s tenure; where the country is a (militarily & economically) strong welfare state, where providing everything to the people is state’s responsibility and everyone including the rulers are accountable. It is no way to implement Islam without first providing the people with all the basic necessities of life.Pakistan’s role in the World & Islamic World: There are 56 Islamic countries in the world and the Muslims make approximately one fourth of the whole population of the world; but even altogether their strength is zero, even though they have the most natural resources in the world e.g., oil etc on which the whole world’s economy is dependent. Pakistan should work for the unity of the Islamic world so that we have a say in the world affairs and no countries e.g., USA, Israel, India etc can act against Muslim interests anywhere in the world. Moreover Pakistan should work for peace and betterment of mankind and be an example to the entire world. How to bring the change! Allah may forgive his own rights on you (Haqooq-ullah), but he would not forgive you for other people’s rights on you (Haqooq-ul-Ibad) and the injustice, hardships or problems that you have caused to other people (knowingly or unknowingly). And if you are a ruler or someone in authority or command, then you would be held responsible even more.This can be achieved by either of the following: A revolution (inquilaab) eliminating everyone responsible for the miserable conditions Having an honest leadership and non-corrupt government in place (through routine election process) Implementing all the above mentioned things on individual and collective level (starting from one’s own self and than expanding it to cover the people around and the society) Changing the basic structure of society and system (has to be implemented by the government and the public together)

“Most Muslims are not fundamentalists, and more fundamentalists are not terrorists, but more present day terrorists are Muslims and proudly identify themselves as such.” writes Bernard Lewis in ‘The Crisis of Islam’. But Dr. Martin Luther King logically said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Terrorism has no absolute and globally accepted definition and its interpretation can easily be used or abused to suite particular needs. The adage that “one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter” reveals the wide range of variations in its interpretation but, if simply stated, terror is extreme or intense fear. It is a psychological state, which combines the physical and mental efforts to create dread and insecurity.

GLOBALLY ACCEPTED DEFINITIONS:

“Acts committed with the aim of seriously intimidating a population, forcing a government or international organization to abstain from performing any act, or seriously destabilizing or destroying the fundamental political, constitutional, economic or social structures of a country or an international organization.”

“Any action constitutes terrorism if it is intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act.”

State Terrorism to counter terrorism:

when the whole world is in the cruel jaws of it, this reality cannot be curtailed through the more terrorism by the state ; as many countries of the present world are trying to do it in this way. The obvious examples of Kashmir and Palestine speak horrors of inhuman acts. The relative term ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter’ is also fully involved here. The freedom movements ofPalestinians, Kashmiris and the Chechens have been branded through the Western media as terrorist movements.

In order to counter terrorism countries are unilaterally adopting the same attitude (definition), which the US has set for them – pose the opposition as terrorists in front of the world and attack them unilaterally. Israel as well as India’s state-terrorism falls in this scenario. As in the current imbroglio of Middle East Crisis, Israel’s unilateral attack over Lebanon – just to search its two beloved and loyal soldiers – has further deteriorated the situation.

Interior Motives Of US War On Terrorism:

If we take a look of Political disputes like Iraq, Afganistan, the Interior motives of war on terrorism are:

To get hold of natural resources of Muslim countries, either by the policy of friendship or confrontation.

To malign Muslim freedom struggles like movements going on such as in Kashmir, Chechnya, Palestine.

To damage the ideologies of Islam specially Jihad to project Islam as a religion of intolerance. The fear factor is that Islam still is spreading in the West at a faster pace, 4500 embraced Islam after 9/11.

To stop the rise of orthodox Muslim governments. They are doing it in the name of democracy.

They are changing the elected governments. e.g. Iran’s government, is being isolated by imposing sanctions. They are there to protect monarchies in Gulf States and a Military rule in Pakistan.

To ensure a greater Israel on Arab Land for the satisfaction of American jewfish lobby.

To spread its own culture. If a nation dies it’s a national death but if a nation dies of cultural death, it’s all over. The United States is permeated its culture in the countries on the name of terrorism. As in Iraq, they made dance clubs in the Green Zone. The uniform of new force of Iraq i.e. identical as it matched with USA.

To check the nuclear technology of the Muslim countries like Iran and Pakistan.

Cause of terrorism in Pakistan:

The sectarian anti-Shiite militant groups like the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan were preaching hatred against the Shiite Muslims and employing some terrorist activities. The extremist sectarian intolerance came to Pakistan only after the 1979 revolution in Iran. The Iranian revolution emboldened the Shiite Muslims of Pakistan against their suffering at the hands of anti-Shiite groups. This was further aggravated when a Sunni-dominated Iraq with the backing of the USA and Saudi Arabia waged a war upon Shiite dominated Iran. A specific form of terrorism termed “sectarian terrorism,” which in turn is a major cause of rise in religious extremism and intolerance in Pakistani society.

The Soviet Afghanistan War was the most critical event responsible for spreading militancy and intolerance in Pakistan. In order to fight proxy war against the Soviets, the US and the Arab countries provided the funds for arming the Mujahideen who were motivated for battle through religious propaganda urging them to expel the infidels from Afghanistan. The aftermath of the Soviet withdrawal exposed the damage, transformation of violence, and weaponisation into Pakistani society. The armed freedom struggle surfaced in Kashmir during the eighties gave the resistors a continued reason to be present in the region, which was exploited by Pakistan. Therefore, after 9/11, when a gag was put on these fighters, they turned their guns towards their adopted country.

The internal factors:

Pakistan is fighting against the menace of terrorism on both the fronts; external as well as internal. The derailing of democracy has had a profound impact on Pakistani society. One cause is political deprivation, political alienation, leading to hopelessness, and sense of powerlessness, which then leads on to these terrorist acts. In reality, the economy of Pakistan, replete with corruption, has disturbed the distribution of wealth. Dishonesty, bribery, the drug trade and other malpractices are common to make easy money. Black moneyhas created new moneyed class in the society distributing the balance of social structure.

This factor alone is ideal for the infiltration of terrorists in various segments of society. The sense of deprivation among the small provinces, their feelings of social injustice and discrimination are serious indicators of imbalance. Polarization based on various castes, classes, religious affinities liable to be manipulated by the anti-state forces. The prevalent system of education is a colonial legacy and has not been completely customized to meet the ideological, modern, scientific and progressive needs of the country. It also does not address the ideals of Islam to rise above the narrow divisions, at times the media communicates manipulated news and ideas, which causes sensationalism, ‘Madrassas’ centres of hate-preaching to young minds is the critical part of the problem. The economic factor has been a major cause of religious exploitation of a sizeable segment of middle/lower middle class of the society.

The ‘Zamindars’ and ‘Jagirdars’ own 32 per cent pf the privately cultivated land. Due to the increase in general awareness, a suppressed community often rises violently against this injustice leading to extremism in the society. A weak judicial system and judiciary are also responsible for these unwanted tendencies. The judiciary is often criticized for inefficient performance on account of fear, favor and corruption. Digital registration of the national data base is a major security. (NADRA) has been established, it is still found wanting. Incomplete facility is a contributory factor in harboring terrorists/miscreants responsible for the rise of militancy.

CAUSES at international level:

Unresolved political disputes: In the hot disputes of the world, Muslims are involved. No effort has been made to resolve these issues e.g. Kashmir, Palestine, Iraq, Afganistan, Chechnya.

Ineffectiveness of UNO: The world body formed after the Second World War. “To avert any other international war. The disputes if resolved in UNO, the terrorism was not prevailed as it is.

Universal law of cause-and-effect:

State terrorism will produce obviously terrorism.

Double standards of the West: On one hand, previously when Afghan Jihad was going on- they were projected as heroes and then became terrorists. Distrust between Muslims and the westerns. Extremist activities by some terrorist groups, like Al Qaeda. The pride of US as being unipolar. The Muslim world is victim of illiteracy, ignorance, poverty, intolerance and sectarianism.

Terrorists Groups in Pakistan:

Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen were formed to wage Afghan Jihad. After the Soviet Afghan war, these two groups merged to form Harkat-ul-Ansar (HUA) redirecting their focus towards supporting the militancy or freedom struggle in Indian held Kashmir. Pakistan not realizing the future consequences was content, as these groups were fighting the freedom struggle.

A combination of all these factors related to the Soviet Afghan War, the Iranian revolution, the Kashmiri freedom struggle, Pakistan’s socio-political conditions, and Madrassas sponsored by Arab countries made Pakistani militant groups a force to be reckoned with. The Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) is an anti-Shiite radical sectarian group. One of the militant offshoots of the SSP isLashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ), which focuses primarily on anti-Shiite attacks and was banned by the government in August 2001.Another terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) has openly declared war against the US. Pakistan outlawed JEM in 2002. The Lashker-e-Tayyiba (LT) began as the militant wing of the Islamic extremist organization Markaz Dawat-ul-Irshad (MDI), which was formed in1987 among others by Abdullah Azzam; a Pakistanian religious scholar. The LT has conducted a number of operations against Indian troops in Jammu Kashmir since 1993 and claimed responsibility for numerous attacks. Pakistan’s socioeconomic conditions helped these organizations and groups recruit the militants and turn into forces.

Today, all these and other religious extremist and terrorist groups complicate the problems for Pakistan’s war on terror. Today these groups are often exploited by the Taliban and Al-Qaeda to commit the terrorist acts against the sensitive targets inside Pakistan in retaliation to the army’s operations against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda

How did Taliban remerged:

Many Taliban escaped the hunt at the time and went underground mixing up in the local Pashtuns with their weapons intact. They later re-emerged in the past two years and have inflicted heavy losses on coalition forces as well as Pakistani forces. The first reason for re-emergence of the Taliban is that the US at the time of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEP) never considered Taliban as the core enemy versus the Al-Qaeda. Therefore, the focus of the US forces after the fall of the Taliban government remained on Al-Qaeda rather than both.

Whereas the US and NATO moved into Kabul and Northern Afghanistan, which was comparatively peaceful, no serious efforts were made to extend toward South, where the Taliban got an opportunity to regroup in their stronghold. It was only in 2004/2005 that the Canadian and British forces were moved to Kandahar and Helm and respectively. This lapse of two to three years allowed the Taliban to regroup as a force. At the same time, India, in retaliation to the December 13 terrorist attack on its parliament, amassed its forces on Pakistan’s border to take advantage of the prevailing anti-Pakistan international environment. Pakistan was forced to move its armed forces to the eastern border to protect its integrity. Taking advantage of the situation on both sides of the border, the Taliban were able to regroup in south and east Afghanistan as well as in Pakistan’s tribal areas. The last UNSG report on Afghanistan highlights that the corruption, opium production, lawlessness, and human rights violations are all on the increase. There are numerous internal and external factors, which make the war complex particularly for Pakistan. The regional dynamics, culture, customs, treacherous andinaccessible terrain with porous border are main features of the area and the people.

Interests of external players in Afghanistan:

The main US interest is to stop the spread of religious fundamentalism and terrorism coming from Afghanistan. It is also in US interest to check the flow of narcotics emanating from poppy fields of Afghanistan. The presence of US forces in Afghanistan is aimed at long desired policy to contain China. The economic issue that drives Washington’s interests is the potential oil resources of the Caspian Basin region. Russia wants to protect the vulnerability of bordering the CARs against the threat of Islamic extremism emanating from Afghanistan. India wishes to exploit the prevailing international anti-terrorism sentiments to her advantage. However, India would like to benefit from proposed oil-gas pipeline project running through Afghanistan and Pakistan to meet her fast growing energy needs.Iran has a major concern in protecting the interests of Shiite minority in Afghanistan; therefore, predominately non-Pashtun government in Kabul is in Iran’s strategic interest. It is in Iran’s interest that Afghanistan should remain relatively unstable, so as to strengthen the case for running the pipelines through Iran. The CARs particularly Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan would like to see a stable Afghanistan to enable them to pass their oil and gas pipelines to warm water ports of the Arabian Sea.

Pakistan’s long term interests

Its foremost political interest is to see a strong, stable and united Afghanistan, with a Pakistan-friendly government. This will enable to laying of oil and gas pipeline from the CARs through Afghanistan to Gwadar. The continuous stay of the world’s largest number ofrefugees in Pakistan for more than two decades has resulted in serious socio-economic and political problems. Wheat, rice, sugar, tea and livestock are smuggled into Afghanistan. Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to revive a plan for a trans-Afghan gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan. Pakistan can also benefit simultaneous from the agricultural and industrial products of the CARs at cheaper rates. Pakistan can get the military technology and equipment from these states at much cheaper rates.

Pakistan’s support

A number of sectarian organizations was banned and their assets frozen to curb sectarian terrorism. Madrassas reforms were undertaken. A major effort was launched to revamp the law enforcement agencies by better equipping and training them, a program was launched to prepare the database of all the nationals of the country under a newly established organization National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The government directed the expulsion and extradition of all foreign students. Most of these students in the Madrassas of tribal areas were directly or indirectly linked with Al-Qaeda. At the international level, the government cooperated with the UN to curb the menace.

To allow the use of Pakistan’s airspace and bases for OEF, Pakistan air force provided necessary infrastructure and logistic support. The US air force A-10 aircrafts were allowed to operate from selected Pakistan air force bases.

Impediments in Pakistan’s War on Terror in Tribal Areas;

It is very difficult to guard every inch of ground to eliminate cross border movement of the militants. This problem is further compounded by the weapon-friendly culture of the area, easement rights that allow free cross border movement of the Tribal without any documents add to the complexities. The local religious leaders are also a source of irritation for the operations by the army. The army is generally accused of not doing enough to stop the cross border movement of the Taliban. The other external factor is thegrowing Indian influence in Afghanistan’s cities bordering Pakistan, which is playing a negative role in the war against terror. To check cross border movement of militants is another important factor. The effective sealing of such porous is only possible if strong measures are adopted on the border by both sides.

EFFECTS ON PAKISTAN:

Afghan refugees US military strikes the NWFP influences Taliban are increasing. Taliban elements and their mentors Al-Qaeda, moved into the major cities. It has forced the state to station many divisions of army for law and order at the cost of earning the opprobrium of “use of force” against its own population. The rugged border terrain of nearly 1,500 km at the height of 10,000 to 15,000 feet, with no communication infrastructure, has enabled the foreign elements to fully exploit the situation. Pakistan has dispatched almost 70-80,000 of troops to the tribal regions. These governments are labeled as “un-Islamic”.

This preparation has to be dispelled that fight against terrorism is a new form of warfare where the attackers are insidious, elusive and yet create sense of create sense of intimidation and terror. As far as NATO operations in Afghanistan are concerned, they are limited by inadequate number of troops, and with difficulties of terrain primitive tribal culture, weapon stocks and drug money.The Taliban are resurgent. In fact, it is a cumulative effect of many factors: due to diversion of resources to Iraq war, NATO’s insufficient level of troops, rise in opium trade, limited control of Karzai government around Kabul, poor governance, high level of corruption and unemployment, lack of reconstruction, rise in violence and rampant warlordism. A nagging perception in some quarters in the West, especially the US, that Pakistan is not “doing enough”.

On the political side, Pakistan’s international political isolation ceased immediately and it assumed the role of frontline state yet again. Despite the AQ Khan nuclear proliferation crisis, the US gave Pakistan the status of ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’.

“There is no silver bullet that can address global terrorism in all its complexity,” writes Dr

Maleeha Lodhi in “The Threats of all Threats”.

Every continent has seen acts of terrorism. Perpetrators belong to diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and faiths.

She proposed a broad-gauge counter-terrorism strategy based on nine ‘Cs’:

1) Comprehensiveness: A comprehensive, multifaceted strategy is needed that encompasses law enforcement, political, social, cultural, financial and diplomatic measures.

2) Consensus at the global level is required on a strategy incorporating both short- and long-term measures.

3) Causes and conditions that breed, encourage and contribute to terrorism must be objectively identified and addressed.

4) Confusion about the definition of terrorism and mixing every Muslim with terror is discourging.

5) Capabilities must be improved and national capacities strengthened across the spectrum to pursue terrorists and prevent terrorist activities.

6) Cooperative rather than coercive national and international strategies should be pursued so that the reaction to counter-terrorism measures does not compound the problem.

7) Civil liberties and principles of good governance must be upheld in the fight against terror, because real security can only be achieved through respect for human rights.

8) Civilization and cultural: dialogue and understanding including engaging in the battle for the hearts and minds, must become an integral part of global consensus-building to evolve a joint strategy. Such a dialogue must be premised on the understanding that the root cause of friction between civilizations are not primarily religious differences, but mainly issues of power, competing political and economic interests, policies and misunderstandings.

9) Conference at the summit level must be called to craft and coordinate an approach based on these elements.

CONCLUDING REMARKS:

• Today terrorism is complex in scope, even across the continents by non-state actors. Countering this multi-headed phenomenon requires a multi-pronged and sustained policy by the governments across the globe.

• Deprivation and an unjust political and socio-economic dispensation rapidly give rise to frustration.

• The remedy lies in a tolerant and democratic society. However to enable the United Nations to evolve an effective strategy for this purpose it is imperative to define terrorism that may be acceptable globally. Also make a distinction between terrorism and legitimate struggle for freedom and right of self-determination, the denial of which can breed terrorism and a threat to “peaceful co-existence”.

In 21^st century economy is taken as ‘Religion’. It is the blood in the veins of nation state, vitality in the human muscles, base for brutal wars and a reason for governments to rule. The motherland has painfully experienced rising poverty and sinking economy; despite world’s best canal system, profitable geostrategic location, and unexplored resources. The nation, who earned nuclear position despite miseable poverty and sever foreign pressure, can do wonders, if provided with dedicated leadership.

Present Scenario:

Pakistan’s economy is in a downward spiral. Inflation is at 25percent (food inflation 50%), foreign reserves are falling, and the government is in danger of defaulting on its foreign debt. A spike in global food prices has hit Pakistanis especially hard, and the global financial crisis only threatens to exacerbate Pakistan’s economic woes. Pakistan is watching foreign investors flee.

Weak governance has contributed to growing militancy in Pakistan, economic troubles, and regional instability. As in the past, the possibility remains that Pakistan’s military could conduct a coup if it perceives the government as inept. Or Pakistanis may rise up in protest due to the government’s inability to deal with economic issues.

Ø Food crisis oil prices, low agriculture yield due to heavy cost of production (seeds, pesticides, water and fertilizers), unavailability of small loans to small farmers, power shortage, fast increasing of population, poor governance in managing the food and to stop its smuggling to Afghanistan. Central Asia and Iran which stored big food stocks due to American war. World Food Crisis encouraged its smuggling. Less attention by the governments to live stock, dairy stock, increased circulation of paper currency. Big share of ‘Middle Man’.

Ø World Food Crisis: population explosion, emergence of middle class with more food consumption in India and China. Low yield in India. Earthquake in China, increase in world oil prices.

Ø Deceleration of growth in manufacturing: energy crisis. Terrorist incidents. High interest rates by SBP discouraged Private investment. High imports and low exports. 75 industrial units in Karachi and 85 in Faisalabad were closed due to energy crisis.

Ø Fiscal deficit: 6.5% of GDP, target was 4%. Due to slippage in revenue and expenditure- Dismal Growth; lower Tax collection. Heavy subsidy on oil effected current expenditure, increased in development expenditure. Decline external financing flows, so the government borrowed from SBP which caused monetary expansion, continuous Defense Budget.

Poor tax system:

Only salaried persons pay regular tax, while the major sectors find safe path through corruption. Agriculture tax cannot be imposed due to feudal in policy making.

Unilateral growth:

Production was not encouraged by the previous government, rather Pakistan was made a consumer society, services sector was enhanced which created less jobs.

China factor:

Cheaper Chinese products destroyed our industry thus created unemployment, more burdens on economy.

Illiterate labor: is less productive

Regional conflicts has marred the gas pipelines and usage of Gwadar.

· Given the multiple dimensions of uncertainty in the global, national and household economy, it is essential that the highest priority for protection to the poor where uncertainty can lead to irreversible damage-in the shape of high morbidity and mortality, decline in the nutritional status of children and women, and withdrawal from schools.

· An over-arching principle should be maximum leveraging of scarce public resources by exploring all potential avenues for private partnership in the public development program.

· A core structure weakness of the economy highlighted by the current crisis is the lack of international competitiveness that retards an export-led growth strategy.

· Govt’s role in providing marketing information and producing to international needs to be revamped.

· Within country logistics costs should be reduced.

· Worker skills are critical to give our firms a competitive edge in international markets; programs for skill upgrading need to be modernized.

· The current debilitating power shortages have to be redressed quickly and a well through medium term energy plan need to be in place that provides reasonably priced and good quality power to industry.

· Given our natural comparative advantage in agriculture, i.e. the world’s largest contiguous canal irrigation system, diversity of agro-climatic zones, good soil conditions and cheap labor with a centuries old farming traditions, poor crop yields and absence of high value added agricultural exports, is a glaring example of unfulfilled promise.

· Maintenance, modernization and expansion of key rural infrastructure spanning water, roads and electricity are in urgent need of policy and institutional reforms.

· Accelerating the growth of small and medium farms where there is considerable potential for increasing yield per acre and employment generation

To reduce regional inequalities by actively targeting less-developed areas of the country. The Balochistan govt must be provided the resources to implement its strategy. In addition, similar strategies need to be developed for NWFP.

Greater decentralization of resources and setting of development priorities by the provinces themselves.

Encourage investment by China in Pakistan through development of infrastructure and appropriate

incentives to tap South Asian markets.

Increase and modernize land trade routes, including investment in infrastructure and allowing each others trucks and containers to carry cargo to market destinations.

In the fast growing world of communication, Internet is comparatively a new entrant, but it has brought about a great revolution in the field of communication. In a very short span of time, it has linked together the whole world. In simple terms, internet means the connection of a large number of computers with one another. Now, through internet, almost all the computers of the world are interconnected with one another. Seen in this context, internet has transformed the world into a global village in real terms.

Internet is replete with countless advantages. It has made possible man’s access to countless websites, informative programmes, scientific discoveries, global, political, social, economic and cultural developments, world events and happenings, great libraries, treasures of knowledge, vast information and entertainment and much more. Then, internet is providing low cost source of chatting, communication and exchange of ideas and information. Through internet, a student can consult great libraries and scholars; a doctor can learn about advancement in medicines and surgery; an adventurer can find his life partner also.

Unfortunately, the wrong and corrupt use of internet has also made it a great curse and nuisance. Many people use internet for vulgar chatting, nude films and immoral programmes. In Pakistan, there is mushroom growth of Net-Cafés and computer-centers where in specially designed private cabins alongwith young boys and girls, elderly people and small children too are seen busy in doing vulgar chatting and watching immoral programmes. This thing not only destroys their moral character but also wastes most of their precious time. Moreover, it is playing havoc with all our religious, social, moral and cultural values. Then, internet is used to spread disinformation, rumours, sensational news, poisonous propaganda and computer virus. All this causes a large-scale harm. As internet has confined the people to four-walls, healthful activities like sports, games, social gatherings, cultural activities, sharing of feelings, etc. are vanishing away rapidly.

It is the crying need of the hour to put internet to right and wise use. No doubt, internet is indispensable these days but its wrong use is a total nuisance. Its wrong use must be discourages. The government should impose a code of ethics on Net-Cafes and computer centers. Parents should keep a strict watch on their children in this respect. Strict action must be taken against the web-sites that spread disinformation, immorality, vulgarity and computer virus.

Internet should only be used as a source of vast information, fast communication and positive entertainment. Its wise and proper use can make it a real blessing for one and all.

NOW on return Journey All of them don’t get a direct Train to PUNE. So they all decide to take a Passenger till Lonavala, from there they can easily get a LOCAL to PUNE
SCENE 2 (MUMBAI – LONAVALA):
